What is CrossFit?

image

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movement at high intensity!

This weekend I was lucky enough to attend the Level 1 CrossFit Cert at Alamo CF which was coached by some of the greatest crossfit athletes, Chris Spealler and Lindsey Smith! I learned so much in the past two days.  Not only will I be able to coach but I will be able to improve my technique and performance with a better understanding of the foundational movements and progressions.  There is a lot I need to work on.  Hip extension being the main thing. The nutrition portion of the cert was especially beneficial and I would like to try the zone diet instead of just the paleo diet. Overall this weekend was motivating and inspirational!  I look forward to becoming a better crossfitter and helping others become great crossfitters!

Hunger Games

My friend Erica told me about this book series that was really good called “The Hunger Games”.  I really wanted to get back into reading so I decided to buy this book over the weekend.  I went to Barnes and Noble and looked everywhere for it but couldn’t find it.  She told me it was a fiction novel so I scanned the fiction section.  Nada! Finally after browsing the bestseller shelf I found it.  Then I quickly realized why I hadn’t located it sooner. It was in the TEEN fiction section! Haha! So long story short I’m hooked on this book and can’t put it down.  The story line and suspense has me flipping through the pages like crazy! I highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to start the second book in the series! Thanks Erica for this great suggestion! Just the book I needed to get me reading again! :)

95 Pounds!!!

I weight 95 pounds! Haha! Yeah right! That will never happen again. But for the longest time in CrossFit 95 lbs was my enemy. For some reason I developed this huge mental block that was so hard to overcome.  I remember thinking to myself if I could just get past 95 and hit 100 I would be happy. As time went on I found myself gradually getting stronger. Through consistent training and a healthy diet I was eventually able to FINALLY reach and eventually surpass my goal of power cleaning 95 lbs.  This week reminded of those times when 95 lbs seemed so far away compared to where I am today.  On Tuesday I power cleaned 95lbs 45 times during the WOD! Today I was able to knock out 20 thrusters at 95lbs in a WOD! Going into the WOD I thought for sure I was going to scale the weight down. But I kept adding weight to see what the weight felt like and I eventually made my way to that damn 95lbs.  It was definitely heavy but just like everyone else  you kinda wanna feel like a badass even if it means nearly breaking your back.  I didn’t finish the WOD before the time cut off but looking back from where I started to where I am today I can honestly say I feel like a badass! :)

Oh and I hit a PR on my front squat! 65Kilos! Yay! Did I mention I HATE front squats!

I LOVE CROSSFIT!

Patriot Games 2011!

Today I participated in my first weightlifting meet! There is so much I want to say about this experience I don’t know where to start. First, I am so happy I did it and that my cousin Stephen talked me into it.  Second, I was so nervous that I tossed and turned most of the night before thinking about it.  And to make matters worse I was first up to lift.  Surprisingly I did better than I expected and to be honest I had no idea what to even expect. One option was falling on my face or ass in front of a lot of people. Luckly that didn’t happen. The women who competed were amazing and I am in awe of their strength. Watching other women lift is inspiring. I look forward to getting stronger and competing in more weightlifting meets!  Below are videos of my lifts. Thanks to SonnyDawg for the awesome footage and support! :)

Snatch First Attempt 28kg

Snatch Second Attempt 30kg

Snatch Third Attempt 33kg

Clean & Jerk First Attempt 45kg

Clean & Jerk Second Attempt 50kg

Clean & Jerk Third Attempt 53kg

Overall I hit all six of my lifts but more noteworthy is the new PR on my jerk! :)

Lift. Heavy. Weight.

Sigma Kappas and UTSA Football

UTSA and what appeared to be the entire city of San Antonio celebrated the inaugural UTSA football game against Northeastern State on Saturday. Over 56,000 fans showed their support and cheered on the Roadrunners.  UTSA is still undefeated after they slaughtered the opposing team 31-3.  For once I felt proud of my alma mater. Our day was filled with tailgating, cold beverages, and excitement! Not to mention a few scuffles. Haha! With just 11 seconds left of the game a crazy fan rushed onto the field with a foam hand. This crazy fan happened to be a fellow crossfitter named Aaron! I just love when things happen that you least expect. He found a rare opportunity in life and literally ran with it! We should all do the same minus the arrest of course. I had a great time with my Sigma Kappa Sisters and I look forward to more UTSA victories!
